Tomato is the most consumed vegetable in the world; in fact, tomato has no rival. With the use of modern irrigation technology, this crop can grow all year round. The consumption of tomato (fresh and processed) in Nigeria, a country of about 180 million people is inversely proportional to the rate of production of tomato.
The seasonal fluctuation in Nigeria, coupled with the fact that more production comes from the northern part of the country creates an imbalance in the availability of tomato in the market all year round. Most of this produce is transported to the southern part of the country, of which Lagos State consumes 70% of it per day. Yet, about 50% of the produce (i.e about 0.8m ton) get spoilt on the way due to poor quality of seeds planted which cannot endure the stress and temperature they are exposed to (also equivalent to poor harvest waste).
This is why we see it as a strong need to create a balance even while making profit with a goal of becoming a high volume producer in this industry. Our use of greenhouse gives us an added advantage over most of the northerners who use open field farming method as we can sell on the standard market, which has a fixed price regardless of the season. With this, revenue is generated from prearranged purchasing agreements with retailers. This guarantees revenue of N2.4million in total in the first year, with profit margin increase in the following years.
Cucumber is a fast growing, short-seasoned vegetable that belongs to gourd family (Curcubitaceae). The gourd family members include Watermelon, Melon, Squash, Fluted Pumpkin etc. Cucumber matures in 40 – 50 days. Cucumber has different sex expressions that could affect pollination, eventual fruit formation and yield.
Cucumber may be Monoecious, Dioccious, Gynoccious, Andrcecious, Hermaphroditic, Andromonoecious or Parthenocarpic. However, a gynoecious cucumber produces more fruits and mature earlier while parthenocarpic cucumber can be suitable for greenhouse production. A lot of breeding efforts have been put into cucumber by Asian, European and American countries. Cucumber production is a very lucrative agribusiness that can return millions in short time.

Sweet pepper is mainly used for colouring of food especially fried rice and also mostly used in salad ingredients and in decoration of foods.
Others are Atawere (bird pepper), Sombo (red pepper), Tatase. Sweet pepper is sold for N400 Naira per Kg.
